I love this dress! I don't buy a lot of clothes and I keep them forever, so River Goddess' artisan pieces seemed like heirloom quality and something I would want in my closet permanently. I knew as soon as I opened the package, saw the colors, and felt the fabric that I was going to love wearing the dress. I absolutely love the traditional patterns that River Goddess creates. I hope they will continue to provide these traditional-style patterns in their clothing for years to come. I have the Neera Maxi in Laal Soma and the print is just incredible. I love the birds in the print. It feels like wearing a piece of folk art and also feels historic in a way. I also love the color. I usually don't look good in red, but the orange-red with coral accents looks great with my skin tone and I'm sure it works for many people. The coral was what made me take the gamble that it would work for me.
I love that most of the brand's dresses are lined; however, watch out and make sure you SEE "lined" in the description, because if that word is not there, the dress might not be lined. When in doubt, contact the company to verify. The lining makes light cotton dresses so much more practical and more comfortable to wear. I'm not the kind of person who wants people to be able to see through my clothes and with the lining, the dress is modest. Since the fabric is delicate, you do want to move carefully when wearing this piece so you don't catch it on anything (moving carefully in life is a good thing anyway!). The cotton fabric is light and soft- it is so comfortable to wear and having a lining does not make the dress hot in hot weather. Since this style flows away from the body it is very cool to wear in the heat. I am also hoping to style it with leggings and sweaters in the cooler months so that I can keep wearing it.
I am 5'4" and 135 pounds and the XS/S fits perfectly. The skirt comes almost to the floor on me. I love the tiny bells on the tie strings. I had a skirt in the 90's with the same sort of bells on the drawstrings and so this dress also reminds me of youth and possibilities.
This colorway of the Neera Maxi does not have pockets, and though I love pockets, I am also fine without them because the skirt falls beautifully. Because the fabric is so light, pockets might make the skirt bulge. Be sure to read the description of the piece you are choosing carefully because some of the dresses have pockets and some don't.
This is now my new favorite brand of clothing and I will be adding more of these dresses to my wardrobe over time because they are authentic, high quality, and they remind me of a time when most clothing was made carefully and beautifully and was meant to be kept for a lifetime.
